Fireworks International has announced they will launch the feature film Cargo at MIP-TV. Cargo is a gripping film drama about the underground industry in human trafficking in Europe, as well as an uncompromising exploration of the realities facing asylum seekers today. Four refugees are trying to escape Croatia to the UK. But are they justified asylum seekers or opportunistic economic migrants? Set in the early 1990s, Mira, Damia, Branko, and Ivan flee the bloodshed and the misery of the Balkan wars in search of a better life in Western Europe in the back of a truck. But can they survive the ordeal? Infused with dread and tension, Cargo highlights a terrifying journey into the unknown. Against a backdrop of historical events, it explores universal themes of suffering, loss, entrapment and survival and underlines the escalating global problems surrounding illegal immigration and human trafficking. BAFTA award – winning Daniela Nardini (Festival, This Life, Sirens) stars alongside Velibor Topic (Kingdom of Heaven, Snatch), Heathcote Williams (Hotel, Derek Jarman’s Blue) and Jonathan Sidgwick (Steven Berkoff’s ‘Messiah’ at the Old Vic’) in this moving story from first time UK feature film Writer/Director Andi Reiss and award winning Producer Louis Melville. MIP-TV 2006 will also see Fireworks International launch the brand new half-hour comedy series The Jane Show and drama mystery series Whistler. Produced by Shaftesbury Films, The Jane Show is set to premiere on Global Television and stars Teresa Pavlinek (History Bites, The Sean Cullen Show, As I was Saying) as Jane Black, a 30-something wannabe writer who foregoes her dream of becoming a novelist to join the ‘normal’ nine-to-five world – only to discover it’s anything but. The series also stars the UK’s Darren Boyd (Smack the Pony, Kiss Me Kate, Green Wing 2). Whistler, one of the world’s most glittering winter playgrounds, provides the backdrop for snow, sex and scandal wrapped in mystery. Produced by Blueprint Entertainment and Boardwatch Productions, Whistler chronicles the lives of three families living in the seemingly perfect world-class mountain resort that is the Mecca to elite athletes from all over the world. But when a local snowboarding legend returns from the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics with a gold medal, only to be found dead on the slopes, it sends shockwaves through the community. Beck’s mysterious accident sets the stage for the series and forever changes the lives of his friends and family – all of whom have their stories to tell – and their secrets to keep.
