DANCE WITH A SERIAL KILLER is the story of a murder investigation, told by the detective who brought a horrific serial killer to justice. In 1989 a woman called Aline Perez was brutally murdered, in broad daylight, on a beach near Brest in Brittany. The detective assigned to the case was a young homicide cop based in Rennes. His name was Jean Francois Abgrall. Very soon into the murder enquiry he became convinced that the killer was a weird drifter called Francis Heaulmes – who, although he had an alibi for the day of the murder, kept dropping mysterious hints that suggested he was the murderer. In this film he recreates his extraordinary journey across France – on the trail of Heaulmes, visiting crime scenes, police stations and the bleak underbelly of la belle France, to tell the compelling and often frightening story of how he tracked down his suspect. For the first time the filmmakers were granted access to Abgrall’s private records of the case – photographs and crime scene photographs that give a unique insight into the methods of this extraordinarily talented and dedicated detective. |
