A THOUSAND DAYS is the time it takes to heal a broken heart…
“After that time there will be a place for someone else in your heart, for the tears that filled it will have been dried away by the warmth of your soul, the sun inside.” In this powerful and emotional love story an old man revisits long suppressed memories of a passionate affair…
It is present day, and Jonathan is a critically acclaimed, happily married writer, who has been asked by the New Yorker magazine to write a piece about an acquaintance who changed his life. Unexpectedly, his thoughts take him back to 1960s Spain, to the thronging backstreets of Seville… Jonathan, a struggling writer, is searching for inspiration at a bullfight. Moved and provoked by the intensity and brutality of the spectacle, Jonathan is delighted when he accidentally meets Sebastian – the infamous young bull fighter – at a bar later that night. They hit it off immediately and soon become firm friends. When Fiona – Jonathan’s photographer wife – arrives unexpectedly in Spain, she joins the two men for dinner. She immediately sees that Sebastian is in love with her husband, while Jonathan is completely oblivious to the fact. When Sebastian moves to London, Jonathan finds himself spending more and more time with him, and their friendship becomes all consuming. So Jonathan must choose between his obsession with the Matador, and the love of his life – Fiona.
As the older Jonathan contemplates writing his story, and as the memories come flooding back, he painfully comes to terms with the knowledge that he hasn’t really dealt with his feelings for Sebastian and he is forced to re-examine his life. Knowing that her husband still adores her, Fiona stays close to him as he re-lives this dramatic affair – and envelopes him as he reveals his broken heart…
