On a morning in December, 1917, a Belgian relief ship rushing to leave Halifax harbour collided with a French munitions ship carrying a cargo of extraordinary destructive power. The ensuing blast was the greatest known man-made explosion until the atomic bomb in 1945. Yet, to this day, it is an incident barely known to the outside world. Two thousand dead, nine thousand injured, hundreds blinded by flying glass, thousands left homeless and hundreds of children orphaned. Now, survivors of the catastrophe re-live the day with astonishingly vivid memories to contruct a narrative that is dramatic and moving.
