This programme charts an expedition into the Lomako Forest, a remote part of war-torn Congo, in search of the endangered bonobo ape; the bonobo is one of the most human-like and least understood of the great apes. The film examines the paradox of a mission to save apes from extinction in a country facing annihilation itself. It explores the delicate balance between the human condition and the natural world. But, more than anything, The Ghosts of Lomako is an intimate and highly personal documentary that explores a desperate attempt to do the right thing in a world that seems impossible to comprehend.
